I first learnt about painting by René Magritte about 6 years ago whilst I was at college, but just recently whilst designing a few new shirts I have been thinking to myself just how things are perceived as an object when they actually are just an image or a representation of that image.

As I am a little bit sad and a bit of a geek, I decided to look into this a bit further. I am a massive fan of French philosopher Michel Foucault and he even named a book in 1973 after the painting “Ceci n’est pas une pipe.” It discussed how we as the people that engage with the media believe that what we see is real and this recognition of what is real makes it easier for the media to infiltrate our and influence our lives. Basically go and read it.
An example being with blogs we feel as if we know that person just because we see what is going on in their day to day lives. I love Bobby Hundreds and I think that he is one of the best bloggers in the world, but really it is impossible to know him and the brand (the Hundreds) as everything he displays is just a depiction of an image of an experience.
Another example is when people question “Why do you have a diamond on your t-shirt?” You don’t actually have a diamond on your t-shirt you have an image representing a diamond, not a precious stone. Try and explain that to your Grandma.
I am just in one of those moods and felt like educating you a little after the previous two posts. Anyways enjoy your Sunday and remember to smile, because whatever you go through it is just a representation of how people feel they need to react in a situation. Very odd, very odd.
